About This Special Issue
The focus of this topic would be to give an overview on the status of the UV-C LED technologies, with an aim to present the scientific and technical challenges in their additional applications. Even though the legacy sources continue to dominate in many germicidal UV-C applications, the LED community is making progress. Hospitals have been using UV LED technology for years in many applications, but the COVID-19 surge increased interest in the UV LED technologies’ use against viral pathogens in places such as schools, restaurants, retail stores, gyms, etc.
The topic could examine the state of UV-C band LED (100–280 nm) research and technology. In addition, it could cover technical challenges: educational administrators’ struggle to discern how to deploy UV-C, driver issues for UV-C systems and dimming capability in order to extend the life of the system. It could also include safety concerns, such as understanding of accurate dosage required to deactivate a pathogen, and in conclusion cover the stories of successful UV LED applications.
